What is the Backbone Campaign?

The Backbone Campaign is a grassroots effort to embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values. We are expanding the political dialogue by providing creative tools for citizens and the progressive movement. The backbone symbolizes an interlocking agenda, a coalition, and the personal courage necessary to fight for a future worthy of our children.

Brave Islanders Blockade Glacier - Join Rally & Flotilla this Sun. Jan. 4
Many islanders braved early morning cold and some risked arrest to protect the Puget Sound and Maury Island. They earned great attention in the press:
King 5 TV coverage, Seattle Times story, Seattle PI Photo essay by Mike Urban, The Beachcomber's online coverage, POI Boardmember Patrick Christie KUOW, Photos by Dan Schueler.

Backbone Campaign and Preserve Our Islands are hosting a GIANT community Flotilla & Rally on the water & on the beach this Sunday, Jan. 4th.

Make a New Year's Resolution to STOP GLACIER from building a barge-loading pier for exporting 2-7+ MILLION of tons of Maury Island PER YEAR. Stop the spilling, shading and spoiling of the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve. The system is broken and the process has failed to protect the people and the Puget Sound. So now it is up to us.

On foot: Meet us at the Gold Beach Community Center (MAP HERE) at NOON
Small craft: Meet at Sandy Shores launch at 12:30. (MAP HERE) Call Steve with questions at 571-8869.
Large boats: coming from Quarter Master Harbor, meet at the Dockton Marine Park dock at 10 AM. Bring VHF radios and emergency air horns. Call Gregg with questions or to RSVP at 651-6741
Come early or call Bill at 206-356-9980 if you can help.
Press "Continue" below to get more information on how to participate on Sunday.

Host the Backbone Campaign's Procession for the Future on Your Campus this Spring!
UPDATE: The Backbone Campaign has just received a project grant to tour the Procession for the Future! Thanks to the Nathan Cummings Foundation we'll be hitting the road in February.

The Backbone Campaign has learned that in terms of media and recruitment - SIZE MATTERS! Therefore we've created our Procession for the Future parade, consisting of over 20 giant puppets, icons and colorful banners. The Procession stands out and communicates that We the People are taking the lead, that progressive solutions are attainable for a beautiful future, and that being part of the movement is loads of fun! Watch a short video.

Now, learn more about bringing the Procession to your community or campus.

Islanders celebrate Obama's win at Backbone Campaign benefit

From the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber

A crowd of 400 Islanders came together for a raucous election night party held in the cavernous warehouse now housing the "O" performance space.

The party, organized as a benefit for Vashon's Backbone Campaign, began at 7 p.m. as Islanders converged to watch two big screen projections of television election coverage, listen to a lineup of Island bands and share in the excitement of the historic night.

The event was a family affair, with a kids' activity center featuring a pint-sized voting booth, a face-painting station and a table where children composed postcards to send to the new U.S. president.
